Investor Perceptions: Nationwide Health Properties
Objectives
- Determine how investor perceptions impact a Real Estate Investment Trust’s stock valuation
Program
- Interview 25 members of the investment community, including 6 sell-side analysts, 15 institutional owners of the company and four peer owners to assess awareness and perceptions of new management, which had pursued an aggressive acquisition strategy that was generating an improved financial performance.
- Analyze third-party perceptions as to why the stock was trading at a discount to many of its peers.
Results
- Investors identified several key areas of concern or misunderstanding about the company.
- A new messaging platform was developed for use in the company’s management presentation, conference calls, disclosure news releases, shareholder communications, and other communications vehicles.
- In the six months following the implementation of new messaging, the company’s stock appreciated in value by roughly one-third, and commensurate with its peer group.
